Erika finally had her own apartment, and she was very excited about decorating it for Christmas. Her apartment was a studio, however, and she was concerned that an eight-foot, live Christmas tree like the ones her parents always had just wouldn’t fit into the space she had available. Being a college student, Erika enjoyed a very busy life, she knew she wanted an artificial tree to eliminate the risk of forgetting to water it. And, like most college students, she had a small budget to work with in shopping for Christmas decorations.
As Erika perused the selection of Christmas trees at a website recommended by one of her sorority sisters, her eye was caught by the photographs of fiber optic Christmas trees. She thought it might be neat to have a Christmas tree that changed colors. Of course, fiber optic Christmas trees are pre-lit, so the only additional things she would need were Christmas ornaments. However, it turned out that the white Christmas tree she liked best in this category was just too tall for her apartment, so she moved on.
Erika felt like she was on the right track though. If there were pre-lit Christmas trees, she wondered if there were fully decorated Christmas trees. In fact, she found that there were numerous choices of artificially decorated Christmas trees, but after more consideration, Erika decided that she really did want to select her own Christmas ornaments. After all, she thought,Christmas ornaments are personal and special. I want to choose some that will always remind me of my first Christmas in my first apartment.
But, there were still plenty of pre-lit Christmas trees without ornaments, so Erika knew she could at least avoid having to buy Christmas lights. Finally, she chose a four-foot, potted Christmas tree. She also selected a pre-lit Christmas wreath that she intended to hang on the wall over her sofa. She placed her order in a matter of minutes.
When Erika’s Christmas tree arrived a few days later, she could hardly wait to get it out of the box. Since it was a small Christmas tree, it came fully assembled, so all she had to do was secure it in the enclosed tree stand. After accomplishing this, she hung her wreath and then began carefully unpacking the new Christmas ornaments she had purchased.
Erika gently laid all the Christmas ornaments on her small dining table as she unpacked them. She put in a CD of the same Christmas music her parents always listened to while decorating the tree, and then she began lovingly hanging the ornaments on her tiny Christmas tree.
She was extremely pleased with the look of the artificial tree when she was finished decorating it. It’s so lifelike! she thought. She didn’t waste any time before telephoning her parents to invite them over to see her first Christmas tree.
The following afternoon, Erika skipped briskly to the door when she heard her parents knocking. Erika had situated the Christmas tree, so it was the first thing that captured your gaze upon entering the apartment.
Oh, Erika! her mother shrieked. If that little Christmas tree isn’t the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen!
It looks nice, Pumpkin, her father added. Now, that’s not an artificial tree, is it?
Uh-huh, Erika affirmed. I bought it a few days ago online. It came pre-lit and everything. Then, she paused momentarily before asking, You don’t think it’s too small, do you? I just didn’t think I had room for a really big Christmas tree.
Erika, honey, I think it’s perfect, her mother cooed. It might be a small Christmas tree, but it sure has a lot of holiday spirit!
