Even Santa Buys Christmas Decorations Online!
Old Kris Kringle looked around the classroom, which was packed with new elves. "So, what have we learned today about buying Christmas decorations online, like ornaments at the Ornament Shop!" he asked them? " Yes, Lola," Santa called on a particularly perky elf whose hand had vaulted into the air before he even finished asking the question.
“Buying decorations online saves time, money and frustration,” Lola triumphantly answered! Then she added, "You can find great deals for the holidays online, like beautiful inflatable Christmas decorations! 
"Yes, excellent, Lola!" Santa praised her. Lola turned her head toward Mortimer, the elf seated to her right. She shot him a smile that seemed to say, see what happens when you pay attention?
Now, St.Nick continued, "What do I do if it's only a week until Christmas, and I feel like something is missing from the North Pole's decorations? What sorts of Christmas decorations can I buy online?"
Santa was fearful that Lola's arm might actually rip right out of its socket, but he wanted to give one of the other new elves a chance to answer a question. He scanned the room for a smart-looking face, but all the elves were so nervous that it was hard to tell who might know the answer.
Then, a meek and squeaky voice interrupted the silence: "Excuse me, Mr. Kringle, sir," it was Mortimer. As he spoke his eyes burrowed down into his desk.
Santa was surprised. Like Lola, he hadn't thought Mortimer was paying attention to the decorations lecture. Some elves just don't make it through the North Pole's rigorous training program, and frankly, Santa had assumed Mortimer would be one who didn't make the cut. But, true to his jolly nature, St. Nick was more than willing to let Mortimer prove himself. "Yes, Mortimer. Do you know what kinds of decorations are available online?"
"All kinds, sir," Mortimer timidly replied. He went on in his small voice, "You can find Ornaments and other Christmas tree decorations as well as lawn ornaments and other outdoor decorations." Mortimer paused for a moment. Then, he continued with a bit more confidence, "And it doesn't matter if it's only a week before Christmas. A lot of online merchants offer expedited shipping. A week is plenty of time to make sure the North Pole is satisfactorily decorated." When Mortimer finished talking, he slouched over a little and pinched his eyes shut.
"That's right, Mortimer," Santa beamed, "good job!" This bit of encouragement from Kris Kringle himself was enough to make Mortimer lift his head just briefly and smile.
"And, aside from perfecting our own winter wonderland, why else might we want to use the Internet to purchase decorations?" Santa continued his lesson.
"Well, sir, Christmas decorations make great gifts, especially personalized ornaments," Mortimer was on a role. This time, he didn't even wait to be acknowledged. He just gave the answer. "The web offers a much wider selection of ornaments and other decorations than any retail outlet, and many times online prices are lower. You can have everything shipped right to your door without ever being hassled by a salesperson. It's really very convenient. I actually went online to order some Christmas lawn decorations for my mother last week." Then, as an aside to Santa, he added, "She's really been wanting an inflatable version of you for the front yard, sir!"
"Fantastic, Mortimer!" St. Nick was noticeably impressed. Much to Lola's chagrin, Mortimer maintained this level of involvement for the duration of the lesson. When the class was over, Santa asked Mortimer to stay behind.
The shy elf approached Santa's desk and waited to be reprimanded for dominating the conversation in the latter part of the lesson. But, this was not at all what Santa had in mind.
"Mortimer, I wondered if you would be interested in heading up our Online Integration Department. OID does all my Internet shopping. They make sure the North Pole has a steady supply of festive decorations and that all my gift orders are shipped in time to be packed into the sleigh on Christmas Eve. Christmas ornaments are also very popular gifts for St. Nick Day, so we do a lot of online shopping for that, too."
"The elf was flabbergasted: Me, sir? But I haven't even finished the training course."
"Well, I have a good feeling about you, Mortimer. Besides that, the elf who's been in charge of OID since its inception is ready to retire." Santa chuckled to himself. "I told him we might just find the perfect replacement in this new batch of recruits. So, what do you say Mortimer? You'd start Monday."
"Yes, of course, sir! Thank you, sir!" and with this, Mortimer left the classroom in a flurry of excitement. He never would’ve imagined that his knowledge of online shopping could earn him a supervisory position in Santa's workshop, but he planned on ordering a special ornament to commemorate the occasion!
